Here’s an old one from 2005. As you know, the majority of the music in the netlabel/CC scene is mostly electronic in nature, ranging from IDM to techno, chillout and what have you; and a quick sample of the reviews posted here at Gratisvibes reflects that phenomenon.

But today is a day for something a little different. I’m reviewing a folk album by Brian Ellis. He’s released music on Scottish label Benbecula (home of artists Christ. & Frog Pocket) and is also slated to release a full-length album there soon.

The opening track, “Sunset From the Sky” is reminiscent of English folk - light, breezy, gentle guitar accompanied by Brian’s wistful yet soothing voice.

“Lucid Window” is an instrumental piece which carries on from where “Sunset..” left off, however this time with more intricate guitar work. “Seven Flowers” is a change from the first 2 more uplifting tracks, and has an ominous, brooding edge.

Ending off the release are 2 covers - one an acoustic guitar version of Aphex Twin’s “Flim” and “Sound of Silence”, originally by Simon and Garfunkel.

Overall, a great release for those interested in non-electronic recordings on netlabels. Highly recommended.
