Straight out of the wok from the Quiet Lounge netlabel in China is the irrepressible Tao Spinner EP. If you want a change from geek-prescribed techno that tries too hard to be intelligent (ie: clicky Cologne nonsense from Kompakt), Red Hot Wok serve up a riotous dish of rolling basslines, lavish Chinese string stabs, and thick propulsive beats.
The overall mix is ecstatic. There’s no messing about or overindulgent noodling. Also no filler and no Euro-type cheese. The subtle addition of Chinese sonic influences was also an excellent choice. The second track “36″ is a sure dancefloor killer that will have pulses racing from Shangai to Sao Paulo.
The only problem is that at 3 hi-tempo tracks it ends too quick and there’s not enough variation in the sounds, but I’m impressed enough that i’ll now keep an eye on the Chinese netlabel scene. I hope to unearth more goodies.
