I am always on the lookout for unexpected hybrids of music - from things like jazzy chiptunes (like YMCK, Vibrants) or hardcore dub/dancehall (like The Bug).
But this was one chimera which left me totally speechless. 60’s surf rock, lounge music, and breakcore! This EP by Retrigger is perhaps one of the most original releases I’ve heard in the netlabel scene so far. I first got to know Retrigger (who’s from Brazil) thru the Breakcore room in Soulseek. He’s also released a 12′” on Restroom Records and contributed tracks to netlabel releases on Chinese-based Reconfiguration Records.
The tracks sound like your standard hi-tempo breakcore affair, but instead of distorted basslines and gabber kicks we have horn sections, organs, and bongos, and samples from old 60’s American documentaries.
There’s also not much slack on this EP, all tracks are recommended and highly listenable and quite addictive, but I especially like “The Black Lagoon + ABIN Groove”. The Maladroit collaboration track is pretty good as well.
A dazzling achievement all in all.
