This little 3 tracker first appeared earlier this year on the 3rd installment of Project168.co.uk (where the objective is to produce an EP of brand new material in just 7 days). Eyebrows were definitely raised when the rumours went around that the mysterious Last Step had crossed into the world of “free internets music” and uploaded a proper EP. After all, he had released a 12″ on Planet Mu called “You’re a Nice Girl” in secretive circumstances without the hint of a name or an address. The hyperspeed electro breaks on that record seemed to bear the signature of one of Planet Mu’s big stars.
On this release, Last Step brings down the tempo a little bit, and opts for a more straightforward though still skittering rhythm. “bhavani”, the atmospheric title track, kicks off things with a squelchy and spacey bassline, backed with a ever changing yet still 4/4 dance beat.
“the devil” can only be described as a sinister, driving acid house stormer thats packing serious heat and is definitely the highlight of the release. The last track, “second orissa”, is a slow and ambient piece, reminiscent of AFX’s “Backdoor.Ranky.S” track off Analord 11 and a perfect comedown from “the devil”.
