One shouldn’t judge an artist by his name, but when i saw the name “Dr. Blowfins”, I knew, as a big Drexciya fan, I had to get this and see what the link was. (For the uninitiated, Dr. Blowfin was supposedly a “character” in the Drexciya universe, and appeared in one of their track names. Drexciya were a seminal electro duo in the 1990s).
On listening, Carfil doesn’t sound like a bland copy of your typical Drexciyan release. The structure of the tracks bear the hallmarks of current-day electro techno, with 4/4 beats and filtered basses in some of them, but they all share a crunchy, lo-fi feel, which is mixed with a moody, chilled, laid-back atmosphere to great effect.
The rough, abrasive, lo-fi elements in Dr Blowfins’ music aren’t left alone to provide an all-out assault; he also layers over atmospheric textures to soothe as well, especially in the track “2 sommer o6 hagelsturm mix”. This track evolves patiently and steadily, almost like an ambient track.
Standout track: “b4 09″
I’m partial to a little 4/4 action, this one is really groovy! A perfect example of Blowfin’s low-bit + repetitive atmosphere style.
