Every defunct netlabel has had their greats. The now defunct Bedroom Brain netlabel was no exception with its own selection of “experimental and innovative music”. I quite liked a couple of their releases. This one stood out as a great ambient release that I’m sure most people would enjoy.

Highly melodic and entertaining if you care to pay attention. The use of sounds so apt that your ears don’t even notice. Edwin Morris has crafted in what I think is a masterpiece of ambient audio tapestry in the Heart Bowed Down. It was difficult to review this album in a way since most of it is good. Having to select between a few that I think that are great was a difficult choice. With that said, there were some which I liked quite a bit.

Far Leys House was one such track, having all the emotional appeal of a sole instrument lost within a sea of deep droney pads. Sad, gloomy and depressing yet never losing all hope. 5:49 minutes of uninterrupted deep aural meditation.

The End This Story Lies in the Kingdom of God represented yet another track that resonated with me. Its guitar riffs and low bass were great to envelope one self in. The added noise in the background was just a bonus adding variety to the whole thing. If you look at it, the whole piece consisted of not more than a few instruments. Yet, Morris was able to achieve more impact, in my eyes, than most songs with their more sophisticated whiz and bang effects.

Wasnumb was a perfect ending to this album. The human voice could always be depended on to evoke a sense of warmth and familarity in song, if you needed it. Ending this tune was the best, if not the only, use of vocals I’ve heard in ambient music thus far. In this track, noisy choirish vocals wash over delayed synths and tolling bells. Rhythmic audio blips and noisy feedback pulse ever so quickly as we approach the end. At the end, you reallly feel a sense of transcendance. Then, you press rewind and it starts all over again.

Definitely a well-produced, long yet ephemeral, ambient album. Suitable for repeat listens.
