Maybe what caught me by surprise is how much the album sounds good although it doesn’t have that characteristic full sound of commercial mass market music. What surprised me further is how hard a time I had trying to define the genre of this piece of work. The best I can describe him is that he reminds me of Four Tet but more accessible and without the folk instruments while incorporating acoustic guitars and an synthesized organ all wrapped into a seamless 6 track album. The artist describes himself as “an old sailer searching for land”. Anyway, you get the picture.
What is even more surprising about the album is that it’s all composed in “a weekend in March”. If you listen to this album expecting something with a high level of refiment, then probably this isn’t the album for your weekend. For me, it does have its charms and quirks but I’ve grown to like it after a few listens. It gives a much needed break from the kind of music I listen to regularly. Something simple, something fun, something just for the quiet weekend.
Favourite tracks
Like a Whale That Swims Through the Thames
- I don’t know why but the names are so weird and long yet they fit the music nicely. The melody and unintelligible vocals of this track really caught me. Whale maybe.
I have an Elephant in My Pocket
- Faster paced and and more nice melodies. Includes elephant.

June 17th, 2006 at 7:02 pmThe first track seems abit too slow for my taste. I was intrigued in the begining by very odd opening though. As for the second track, like a whale that swims through the thames, it’s such a great track. Was it inspired by the real incident early this year when a whale actually did swim up the Thames river in London? Anyways, i really this that track. I find the whale calls very cute.
Ok, i just finished the third track and i have to say, the aucoustical simplicity is wonderful. Makes me nostalgic. The title really suits the track a hundred percent. I love it. Can i actually download and keep these tracks for free?
WOW, the fourth track takes 10 seconds to start. In my opinion i feel that the loop video on aerotone’s website adds to the effect of their tracks. Definetly a positive. This fourth track is alright, much prefer the 2nd and 3rd track. Okay, the last track is really weird. So i’m gonna stick with the 2nd and 3rd track. Really nice. Thanks for the update cuz!

June 18th, 2006 at 2:03 pmHey cuz. Yep. You can download and keep the tracks for free. All the tracks that are posted on gratisvibes are Creative Commons licensed stuff. Yep. I love the album too and the simplicity.
It’s interesting that a whale actually did swim up the thames. Maybe all the other tracks relate to some real world event too. Haha. Stay tuned to gratisvibes because we’ll be posting new stuff all the time that we’ve discovered and found to be good. ;)
The Aerotone video is very cool. They’re the first netlabel that I’ve seen do a flash video for their releases. I hope others do it too.
